    interview with doogie white

as the first m3 dvd is about to be released we thought we'd start a countdown of sorts. first up is a brief chat with guest singer doogie white (who, i have to tell you, turns in a great performance on the dvd, especially at the end of ain't no love...). we'll be doing a few more things over the coming weeks, so keep looking in!

how long have you known bernie, micky etc and how did the call come to sing with m3?

i first met bernie 10 years ago at some tennis bash that was held pre
wimbledon before it all got boring and sensible. i invaded the stage and sang "your the voice" the john farnham hit.
i think i kinda scared him a wee bit. a wee wild eyed scotsman leaping onstage......

micky i met while we recorded some tracks for the whitesnake tribute album from a few years back. i just back and enjoyed his beautiful slide work.

neil is an old friend, coffee partner and computer guru.

i did don airey's charity ball a couple of years ago and sang with the all star house band. bernie heard me and asked if i would sing some whitesnake songs with him and micky that night. we did it with no rehearsals or even a run through. just faith that i would remember the words and arrangements. it
went really well and then bernie called and asked if i would like to be involved in the tour in 2004. it was a great feelling and we had some splendid moments. for me it was all a bit romantic as i love whitesnake.
i roadied for them on the come and get it tour in glasgow..still have my laminate.

what was it like sharing vocal duties with stefan and was there a sense of
competition on tracks like ain't no love...?

stephan is best mates with joakim who plays keys with me in yngwie malmsteens band. he had stayed at my house a couple of times when in london, so we knew each other. he is very cool and a wonderful singer. i never see what i do as a competition, friendly rivalry maybe. i am just a rock n roll slut and will
sing on stage with anyone..recently on separate occasions i shared a stage with bruce dickenson, jeff scott soto and lastly with mark boals in japan.
aint no love just happened and gave us both a chance to show off and push the envelope. sometimes i kicked stephans ass and sometimes he kicked mine. cant remember who won on the night the dvd was
    shot.

your performance is more "coverdale-esque" that stefans. are you conscious
of this when performing or does it come naturally?

as a fan of the band i just want to bring to the set what i would like to see and hear from the singer in the band. i do that whether it is rainbow, m3, yngwie or cornerstone.
remember i grew up listening to these great singers and some of it rubs off.. the songs are blues based and i tried to reflect that in the vocal approach..but that is what i sound like when i sing the bluesier side of rawk.

what are your favourite whitesnake tracks?

that is far too huge a question to answer. lets just say i bought every album on vinyl at least twice and again on cd. there are just too many cool and groovy songs.

would you do the m3 thing again?

well bernie kinda said that its is a revolving situation and if i was available and stephan was not then it would be a pleasure. but lets face it stephan does a great job and the band and fans have really taken to him and so they should.

bernie, micky and neil are quite a tight unit; they can also go off on
tangents because they have played together for so long. some past
vocalists have found this quite difficult. what do you think about it?

i love that kinda stuff. i did it with ritchie blackmore in rainbow and it really is great fun. certainly keeps you on your toes. but if you know the songs inside out then it works. if you are not used to that way of performing then yes i can see how it could be intimidating.

i last saw you fronting white noise (with uriah heep) which reminded me of
both rainbow and deep purple mk 3; do you think the world needs an 'epic'
classic rock act in the 21st century?

there is always room for that kind of band and with cornerstone we are heading down that road. www.cornerstonemusic.dk but you have to sell records to be able to tour and people would rather listen to their classic rock albums than take a chance on "new classic" tunes.
we keep trying but we need people buying. the folks who came to the shows were well into the band and we hope to build on that later.
white noise was a one off idea that was fun but i cant see becoming more than it was. there is a dvd of the shepherds bush show available from classic rock productions if you care to have a look.

    what are your current plans?

i have a brand new album out on escape music with a guitar player called bill liesegang and boy can he play. liesegang/white "visual surveillance of extremities" cornerstone have just finished mixing a live album from the tour at the beginning of the year. that will be released in june on massacre records.
for now i am getting in shape and learning songs for yngwie's up and coming tour. we have dates in the uk with msg as guests and then some festivals with motley crue, dio and iron maiden. then i start work on the next cornerstone album due for release march 2006. hopefully i can get home in time for tea and crumpet.

    doogie thanks; thanks very much
  • bruce dickinson ın maiden dan ayrılmasının ardından katıldığı iron maiden vokalist seçmelerinde yaşadıklarını şu şekilde anlatmıştır:

metal-rules: you auditioned for iron maiden after bruce dickinson left back in the early '90s. how was it?

doogie white: "long time ago, man... 1993 i think it was, november or something, certainly coming up to christmas, because they ruined my christmas when they gave the job to blaze [bayley]. [laughter] but the thing is, i didn't get the job with maiden, and they went for a definite sound with blaze, and if i had gotten the job i never would have gotten the gig with rainbow. working with [ritchie] blackmore was really a passion for me, it was really exciting, it didn't go on as long as i would have wanted, but he had other plans. had we done another album, who known what would have happened. some of the stuff that ended up on the cornerstone album was actually stuff that i wrote for the next rainbow album."

metal-rules: do you remember which songs you played with maiden in the audition?

doogie white: "they had two live albums out at the time, and it was all of them... 'be quick or be dead', 'from here to eternity', 'can i play with madness', 'iron maiden', 'the clairvoyant'... i did 22 songs with them, twice."

metal-rules: how much did you practice for that gig?

doogie white: "this was funny, i was gonna go to scotland on saturday morning and dickie bell, who was their tour manager at the time, turned up at my door on a friday night with a tape and the lyrics and said you'll be singing at one o'clock on monday for iron maiden. and that was because blaze couldn't make it, because blaze was doing something else. so i went in and sang on the monday and they felt that it was unfair that i'd had such sort notice and they though that i had done well enough to warrant another comeback, so i went back and sang it again ten days later, so i was better prepared the second time than i was the first time. i knew the stuff, like you probably know 'kashmir' from led zeppelin but you couldn't get up and sing it, you know."

metal-rules: did they recorded those sessions?

doogie white: well, somebody told me they taped the second sessions, but i've never heard them. i don’t know if it’s just someone’s imagination or fact but that’s what i’ve heard?
